On Sunday, June 9th 2019, Freedom Mortgage First Flyers hosted 172 participants for their fourth annual Team Freedom Cares 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ. The event benefited Homes for Our Troops and the Liberty USO. Homes for Our Troops works to build specially adapted homes across the country for severely injured veterans. The Liberty USO’s focus is on programming and services that addresses the needs of active duty troops and their families.
The national anthem was performed by the Tony Yates, a veteran Sergeant First Class in the United States Army. Other special guests included HFOT recipient Timothy Birckhead who served for seven years as an air-launched weapons technician on the USS Iwo-Jima. Timothy’s deployment ended when he developed hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP), causing progressive weakness and atrophy in his limbs. He now resides in his fully wheelchair-accessible home, where he is regaining his independence as he continues to readjust to civilian life.
The event raised over $13,000 through recruitment and fundraising efforts led by the company’s First Flyer Program, a rotational training program for recent college graduates. Among the fundraisers was a jeans week collection, UNO’s Grill Dine-in fundraiser, bake sale, and office raffle. Thank you to our sponsors, participants, and donors. Freedom Mortgage is proud to support our military each year through this spectacular event with your help.
