Benefitting Homes for Our Troops – May 15, 2016
In August of 2015, three separate teams of Freedom Mortgage First Flyers presented philanthropic ideas to a panel of executive judges. The guidelines recommended the fundraising activity be held in NJ with long term potential to be rolled out to the other locations. The proposed organization benefitting needed to be nationwide and have an excellent reputation. The final winning idea was a 5K Run and Fun Walk benefitting Homes for Our Troops.
Homes for Our Troops builds mortgage-free, especially adaptive homes for severely injured Veterans Post 9/11, to enable them to rebuild their lives. The organization has completed home projects in 41 states nationwide.
For six months a team of First Flyers, coaches and executives met weekly in Mount Laurel, NJ. Together the team worked on budgeting, official race set up, sponsorships, donations, and communications. While setting time aside to meet weekly was a challenge, the core team who endured created and truly wonderful fun filled local event at the Cooper River Stadium in Pennsauken, NJ.
Sunday morning, May 15th over 300 were officially registered to run and walk, dozens of volunteers were on hand helping, friends, families and the USO were in attendance cheering, DJ was playing great energetic music, and over $11,000 was raised for Homes for Our Troops.
